Varo Bank has announced a permanent expansion of fee-free cash deposits at over 2,000 Kroger Family of Stores locations across the U.S. This change follows a successful eight-week pilot program initiated in July 2026. By eliminating a previous fee of $4.95 for cash deposits, Varo aims to enhance accessibility for customers who prefer cash transactions and to lower the funding costs for its digital accounts.

The cash deposit service utilizes the Green Dot Network, which facilitates the connection between Varo’s digital accounts and participating retail locations. Customers can generate a unique barcode through the Varo mobile app, enabling cashiers to process deposits and transfer funds into their accounts. This service is offered at both checkout and customer service desks within participating Kroger stores.
While customers can also load cash using a debit card, this option remains subject to the standard fee. Partnerships with established retail networks enable digital banks like Varo to provide cash access without the need for their own physical branches, integrating mobile banking with existing retail payment points.
Describing itself as the first all-digital U.S. consumer bank with a national charter, Varo offers a range of services including savings, credit building, and payments. CEO Gavin Michael emphasized the importance of eliminating fees for cash deposits, noting, “Nobody should have to pay a fee just to deposit their own money.” He stated that the move is aimed at simplifying cash management for customers.
This initiative reflects a broader trend among digital financial service providers to enhance the convenience of cash deposits while reducing costs for their users. Through this partnership, Varo is expanding its cash-access capabilities using existing retail infrastructure.
