This acquisition allows Anchorage to enhance its infrastructure for stablecoin issuance, custody, and settlement, while Routable will concentrate on payout distribution, linking clients' enterprise resource planning systems to financial transactions across various currencies.
Routable, backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, specializes in helping businesses onboard and verify payees, automate tax and compliance workflows, and manage high-volume payouts through its developer-focused application programming interface.
In the announcement, Anchorage highlighted its expectation for the digital-asset market to expand beyond cryptocurrency into technology platforms with payout, treasury, and disbursement requirements. Nathan McCauley, CEO of Anchorage Digital, stated, "We spent nearly a decade earning the trust of crypto natives and the world's largest financial institutions, and knew Big Tech and Fortune 500 companies would follow. These entities move billions every day, and until now, few regulated partners could provide a seamless offering across both fiat and digital assets. With Routable, Anchorage Digital has become that partner."
Anchorage Digital distinguishes itself as one of the first fintechs to secure a national trust banking charter from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in 2021, successfully navigating a three-year consent order regarding its anti-money laundering program.
Routable has reportedly experienced over 100% growth in the past two years. CEO and co-founder Omri Mor stated, "We spent years building the plumbing that lets the world's fastest-growing companies pay anyone, anywhere. Joining Anchorage Digital means our clients get the same rails they rely on today, plus a regulated bridge into digital assets the moment they want it."
Following the acquisition, Routable will operate under the name "Routable by Anchorage Digital," integrating native stablecoin and tokenized deposit settlement into its services, creating an "asset-agnostic payment orchestration platform."
Co-founder Tom Harel remarked, "The companies we serve don't think in terms of digital assets versus fiat, they think in terms of payouts that arrive. This acquisition means they never have to choose."
This acquisition also supports McCauley's view that stablecoins are becoming essential in the digital financial system, stating previously, "While they may have started as a bridge between crypto and fiat, stablecoins are now becoming core plumbing in the digital financial system."
Anchorage and Routable are planning to launch integrated offerings over the next few quarters.
