On September 9, 2026, the NSE reported that it had secured bids for 505.81 million shares, which is 5.7 times the 88.64 million shares available for sale. The IPO, which has been in development since 2016, is the largest listing in India so far this year and the second-largest ever, trailing only Hyundai Motor India's $3.3 billion share offer in 2024.
Notable anchor investors in the IPO include the Monetary Authority of Singapore, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, and Life Insurance Corporation of India, which helped raise 67.5 billion rupees ($704 million) last week. The market shows a growing trend of retail participation, supported by a recent economic survey that noted a significant increase in household equity investments, rising from 2% in the financial year ending March 2012 to 15.2% by March 2025.
With a market capitalization of approximately 492 trillion rupees ($5.1 trillion), India ranks among the top 10 equity markets globally, and NSE dominates with a 93% share of the cash market. It accounts for nearly all of India's equity futures trading and a substantial portion of equity options trading.
Geojit Financial Services indicated that NSE's asset-light business model supports high margins and cash generation, offering a promising long-term growth outlook. The valuation of the NSE is set at a price-to-earnings ratio of 42.9, based on projections for the fiscal year ending March 2026; this exceeds U.S. exchanges such as Nasdaq, which is at approximately 23.6 times. In contrast, competitors like the Intercontinental Exchange trade at around 21.9 times.
Sundararaman Ramamurthy, managing director of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), noted that local investor participation has insulated Indian markets from significant downturns amid foreign investor exits, highlighting the record of 35 million Indian investors registered on his platform by 2025.
