Paul Houston, Global Head of FX Products at CME Group, stated that the election results prompted clients to utilize the BRL futures market for risk management outside of Brazilian trading hours, leading to this unprecedented volume. Notably, before the onshore market opened, $2.5 billion worth of notional value had already been traded, roughly three times the average daily volume for BRL futures this year.
During the first half of 2026, the combined average daily volume for Mexican peso and Brazilian real futures and options reached a record $2.94 billion. CME Group continues to provide liquidity around the clock, with contracts denominated in USD, making its platform a primary venue for price discovery and trading of the Brazilian real for global market participants.
