The lab supports two key initiatives: the upcoming Center for Financial Futures and the Rebel Student Investment Fund, creating a practical learning environment for Ole Miss students.
Justin Hailey, a senior finance major from Wesson, credits the lab with providing him valuable skills that aided his internship at FedEx, where he recently accepted a full-time position.
The lab’s hands-on approach not only promotes financial literacy among all students but also equips finance and business majors with practical experience that bridges classroom learning with industry realities. Rich Gentry, dean of the School of Business Administration, emphasized the importance of practical experience, stating that it helps students excel in their careers and stand out during job interviews. He expressed gratitude to alumni and donors for their support in establishing and maintaining the lab.
At the core of the lab is the Rebel Student Investment Fund, where students make genuine investment decisions and manage a real portfolio instead of merely simulating trades. Hailey remarked that the lab enhanced his research, analysis, and presentation skills, which he applied during his internship when pitching ideas to FedEx management.
The lab prepares students for the financial challenges of their careers, alleviating financial stress and fostering retention. Fred Dewald, the lab's director and an instructional assistant professor of finance, highlighted that the lab serves as a vital space for students to apply theoretical knowledge to real market scenarios, enhancing their decision-making capabilities.
Support from donors helps maintain the lab's technology and fund various programs. Contributors include the Hereford Family Foundation, Chuck Doty, Kevin Woods, the Phillips family, Kevin Vogel, and Alex Lawhorn.
As the lab evolves, its impact on financial education and career preparation continues to grow. Hailey noted that the skills he developed at the lab will benefit him as he transitions to his new role at FedEx, instilling confidence in his future career.
