The Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation reported that food inflation surged to 7.74% in September, up from 5.97% the previous month, with rural areas seeing faster price increases than urban regions. Additionally, transport services for goods experienced a 14.73% increase, while personal transport costs rose by 7.46%.
Earlier this month, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) raised interest rates for the first time since 2023 as part of a broader effort by major central banks to tighten monetary policy in response to rising inflation. The RBI indicated that in the current economic environment, further rate cuts are unlikely in the near term, with potential options limited to rate hikes or maintaining current rates.
The inflationary pressures are compounded by vulnerabilities related to supply disruptions from the war in Iran, as India imports approximately 85% of its fuel needs, mainly through the Strait of Hormuz. Elevated oil prices have resulted from ongoing tensions in the Middle East, and analysts expect price volatility to continue, especially given concerns about the impact of Hurricane Isaias.
The RBI projects core inflation to hit 4.4% for the financial year ending March 2027, with overall inflation forecasted at 5.2%, surpassing the bank's medium-term target of 4%. In light of these developments, the RBI has raised its economic growth estimate by 40 basis points to 7.1%, though it warns that prolonged geopolitical tensions, trade frictions, and high international commodity prices may hinder economic activity.
Furthermore, the rural economy faces challenges due to the Super El Nino phenomenon, which has led to the lowest rainfall in over a decade during the critical June to September period for rain-fed farming. The India Meteorological Department noted that this year's rainfall was the fourth lowest since 2001 and the 13th driest on record since 1901, leading to extreme drought conditions in key agricultural states including Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana.
Analysts at HSBC have forecast another rate hike in December, suggesting that while the tightening cycle may not be severe, the data from September's retail inflation indicates a significant uptick.
