CIBC achieved record net income of CAD 8.5 billion ($6.0 billion) in the fiscal year 2025, reflecting a revenue increase of 14%. All business units, including personal and business banking, commercial banking, wealth management, and capital markets, reported higher revenues. Higher net interest income driven by volume growth and margin expansion, as well as increases in fees, commissions, and trading revenues, contributed to these results. Notably, non-interest income comprised 46% of operating income, surpassing the global top 10 median of 40%.
Operating expenses rose by 11%, which was lower than the revenue growth rate, resulting in an 18% increase in operating profit before provisions, compared to the median of 13% for the top 10. Enhanced efficiency came from investments in technology, automation, simplification, and demand management initiatives. CIBC also introduced its in-house AI platform, CAI, aimed at improving productivity and client experience.
CIBC maintained a low gross impaired loan ratio of 0.6% in FY2025, the second lowest among the world’s top 10 strongest banks and below the median ratio of 0.9%. This reflects effective loan loss coverage and disciplined risk management practices, including conservative lending strategies.
Capital adequacy is also a strong point for CIBC, with a common equity Tier 1 ratio of 13.3% and a total capital adequacy ratio of 17.4%, exceeding the North American median of 14.8%. Record earnings have supported capital generation for balance-sheet growth and share buybacks, while customer deposits remained the primary funding source. The bank’s liquidity coverage ratio stood at 132%, with a net stable funding ratio of 116%.
Giorgia Anton, Managing Director and Head of Payments at CIBC Capital Markets, highlighted the bank’s commitment to growth and client support across various market conditions.
The TAB Global 1000 rankings assess the financial performance of banks and financial holding companies based on seven dimensions of balance-sheet strength and financial performance, including profitability, asset quality, and liquidity. The rankings were first introduced in 2002 and have since expanded globally.
