IBM has launched two significant capabilities aimed at assisting financial institutions, governments, and other regulated entities in offering digital asset services while ensuring security and control. As part of a beta offering, IBM Digital Asset Haven now allows clients to connect to permissioned blockchain networks, such as Swift's blockchain-based shared ledger, and extends its platform to include an on-premises beta deployment option.

According to J.P. Morgan Payments, 93% of financial institutions are in the process of modernizing their payment infrastructures as they seek to handle cross-border transactions more efficiently and manage an increasing array of digital assets. This trend underscores the necessity for systems that can accommodate new types of digital transactions while adhering to stringent security, compliance, and operational specifications.

The upgraded IBM Digital Asset Haven now facilitates client connections to Swift's shared ledger, which interlinks 12,500 financial institutions across over 200 markets. With the introduction of the ISO 20022 Messaging Adapter feature in the beta version of IBM Digital Asset Haven, institutions can conduct tokenized deposit transactions using standard ISO 20022 messages. This enhancement allows banks to utilize established payment message formats and processes rather than being restricted to blockchain-specific workflows. The system enables the movement of digital assets continuously, utilizing existing infrastructure while conforming to Swift's standards and the banks' own compliance requirements.

Announced during Sibos 2025 and developed in collaboration with over 40 financial institutions, Swift's ledger transitioned from concept to operational status within nine months, now initially utilized by 17 institutions piloting tokenized deposits. Participating financial organizations have successfully tested tokenized deposits on the Swift shared ledger in conjunction with IBM Digital Asset Haven, showcasing how traditional compliance processes can be adapted for new digital models.

IBM has also expanded Digital Asset Haven to include an on-premises beta deployment, which grants clients complete control over managing digital assets, such as stablecoins and tokenized deposits, within their own data centers. This option allows organizations to deploy the system on existing IBM Z and LinuxONE infrastructure without relying on public cloud services.

Key features of the on-premises deployment include:

- Client-Controlled Deployment, which ensures both the solution and key management layers are contained within the client's own environment, offering industry-leading availability.

- Hardware-Backed Security, utilizing embedded IBM Crypto Express HSMs to safeguard keys, alongside confidential computing to isolate different environments.

- Structured Key Ceremonies that follow formal processes for generating root certificate authority keys, supported by documentation for regulatory purposes.

- A consistent user experience across deployment models, allowing seamless transitions between configurations without needing to rewrite applications.

Tom McPherson, General Manager for IBM Z and LinuxONE, stated, "The financial services industry is entering a new era where tokenized and traditional assets will need to move side by side. As institutions modernize payments and prepare for a future of always-on transactions, they need infrastructure that combines innovation with the security, resiliency, and regulatory compliance requirements of regulated banking."
